R448A (Solstice® N40), developed by Honeywell, is a high-performance refrigerant designed to replace R404A in commercial and supermarket refrigeration systems.
Why R448A is Replacing R404A
For years, R404A has been a popular refrigerant in UK supermarkets, cold rooms, and commercial refrigeration.
However, with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 3,922, it is now being phased out under UK F-Gas regulations.
R448A offers a GWP of 1,387 — reducing greenhouse gas impact by over 60% — while maintaining similar operating characteristics to R404A.
It is classified by ASHRAE as A1 (non-flammable) and is suitable for both retrofits and new system installations.

Bitzer performance tests have also indicated that R448A can deliver better cooling capacity than R449A, despite having the same temperature glide.
GWP Considerations
While R448A has a much lower GWP than R404A, it is still classified as low to medium GWP.
For long-term sustainability, the industry is moving towards refrigerants with GWP below 300, ideally under 150 — meaning R448A is a strong interim solution for meeting today’s environmental requirements.
